I suspect you're not a video-game freak. Everyone always talks about zombies being an expression of our fear of disease but I think a lot of the appeal is the mass quantities of zombies being slaughtered - just like in a video game.
Slight tangent -- is "I Am Legend" really a zombie book even though it involves vampires?
The whole barricaded in the house thing does reek of "zombie," but the fact that they can all talk and reason kind of moves back into vampire territory, IMO. But yeah, the videogame thing does make sense.
